CORPORATE PHILANTHROPY: CAN IT SURVIVE THE COMING ‘TECHNOTRONIC’ CAPITALISM?

‘Late’ capitalism, this current phase that replaced the ‘monopoly’ capitalism of the pre-war era, is now DEAD. As elucidated by Jurgen Habermas, thinker of the Frankfurt school, capitalism was able to move to its present state but only with massive state planning/intervention. State intervention had since the early 70s been relaxed, via globalization, but this only created monstrous predatory finance that hastened the collapse of the system.

As already elaborated in previous articles, the system is now DEAD. In the late 1990s yet, we Fellows of the Independent Review (a circle of economists and experts in Manila) were of the opinion that the system will be dead in couples of years. The ‘virtual economy’ based on magical statistics, speculation, fictitiously valued investments, and conspicuous consumption, can never be sustained, and is bound to crash and die. It was just a matter of time, as we all noted in 2000 (the last time I met the Fellows), before the bubble will burst somewhere (we forecast it will the USA) and the global economy will come crashing down…And it did, beginning last 2007 yet. That descent to the marshes of death is still going on today.

As I also declared in some previous articles, capitalism can still survive, though no longer the ‘late’ capitalism of state planning-to-globalization era. It will be a capitalism in an era of state terror heretofore unparalleled: ‘technotronic’ capitalism in the aegis of global police-state. Nation-states are enemies of the global oligarchy which will re-engineer the world by destroying nations (aftermath of atrocious World War III and global synarchy) and replacing them with city-states and region-states.

If corporate social responsibility or CSR will survive the times, it must be re-tooled at this juncture when the tumultuous changes are gathering winds. Failure to do so, many CSR pursuits will disappear in time, while only those CSR platforms of the most powerful and wealthy oligarchs can survive. All the CSR formats of today can last in relevance maybe till 2040 at the most, after which my forecast is their relevance will have reached its end.

By the year 2050, when populations will have leveled down to a census target of 2 Billion warm bodies, a figure that will be more manageable to the global elites, every member of society will be chipped and provided for. By that time, there will be no further need for ideological movements as Pied Pipers of the new system. Everyone else will be programmed by the system, from cradle to grave the chipped Manchurian Candidate or MC will be provided for. Poverty will end by then, the Millenium Development Goal of the UN will be finally met (the UN will be transformed into the tyrannical global state headed by a global Bonaparte, armed with its own police/military forces), and then will end the ‘sustainable development’ or ‘social development’ pursuits of ‘late’ capitalism.

The chipped Manchurian Candidate or MC will be half-human half-machine hybrid, and will be well provided for as mentioned. Population will be totally controlled, weak and senior members of the population will be ‘oven-baked’ or eliminated, natality will be controlled following China’s pattern of today, criminality will be almost nil, and no one will ever be poor again. Hybrid-human behavior can be easily modified using those advanced cybernetic prototype programs past 2050, and so nobody can fool around with the system.

Tell me, fellows, in a situation such as that coming context of advanced cybernetics or ‘technotronics’ (machine-controlled humans), what need will there be for CSR? Maybe CSR will go back to Victorian Era philanthropy practices, whereby wealthy sponsors will fund the theaters and chipped performers whose performances will be perfected all the more by cybernetics. The staff of the CSR formats of that era, if indeed applicable, will be chipped as well, like those outfits that will be funded because they will perform before the oligarchic-intellectual crowd by then.

When that next capitalist system comes, there will be no more activists or revolutionaries save for those who will proclaim Hallelujah forever to the radically altered, new system. Libertarian activists will be the species of yesteryears, the CSR proto-activism of today will be consigned to history, and anybody who will go against the system will be easily eliminated by sentinel robots of the most advanced prototypes.

Let me end with the challenge: CSR better retool now and reshape its image if it desires to exceed its institutional career. Now is the time.

   • Consequences include loss of coastal wetlands and barrier islands, and a greater risk of flooding in coastal communities
   • The increase in global temperatures is expected to disrupt ecosystems and result in loss of species diversity, as species that cannot adapt die off.

Social Technologies Participating in 2008 World Future Society Conference

Several senior futurists will be presenting at the WFS annual conference

Washington, DC, July 23, 2008—Several senior futurists from the Washington, DC-based research and

consulting firm Social Technologies will be speaking at the World Future Society annual conference,

July 26–28, being held this year at the Hilton Washington in Washington, DC.

 

The topic of this year’s conference is WorldFuture 2008: Seeing the Future through New Eyes.

“I always look forward to attending the World Future Society conferences because hundreds of

interesting futurists, academics, and business leaders gather to talk about fascinating topics—and

this year looks like it will be especially interesting,” says Tom Conger, founder of Social Technologies,

pointing to session topics including Business Futures, The Influence of Mega-Energy Markets, and

 

Future Hotspot: East Asia.

Conger says he’s especially looking forward to attending the two sessions being led by his

colleagues:

• Leader of Social Technologies’ London office Roumiana Gotseva will be part of a panel about

State-of-the-Art Monitoring Systems on Sunday, July 27, from 2–3:30 a.m.

• Later that day, futurists Terry Grim and Scott Reif will be presenting a forum on Assessing

Foresight Capabilities: An Organizational Scorecard on Sunday, July 27, from 4–5:30 p.m.

“Social Technologies has developed the first-of-its-kind Foresight Maturity Model, based on

Carnegie Mellon’s successful software-engineering model, which presents a clear and

disciplined approach for assessing where you are in the many different practices of

foresight,” Grim explains.

“It can help practitioners to answer the question: How are we doing? This continuous process

improvement approach moves each practice through the five different levels of maturity or

development: ad hoc, aware, capable, mature, and world-class. Using this framework,

attendees will learn how to assess or baseline their current level of foresight practice and

then develop an informed plan for moving forward.”

• Also on Sunday, July 27 from 4-5:30 p.m., Social Technologies’ Thought Leader Josh Calder

will be participating on the panel Demographics Is Destiny, which will examine the values

and experiences of generations around the world. Josh will discuss India and China. John

Milewski, Senior Manager for Special Programs at the Newseum, will act as moderator.

The panelists will examine the contrasting demographics, how these different generations

and populations are relating to one another, potential dangers, and the reasons for hope.

skills include strategic planning, scenario development, systems thinking, trend interpretation, and

environmental scanning. An accredited expert with the European Commission, Roumiana evaluates

proposals and projects under the Information Society Technologies and e-Content programs. She is

also a founding fellow of the European Academy for Digital Media and has sat on juries for the

EuroPrix digital content award and the Bulgarian Web Awards. Roumiana holds an MBA from the

University of Minnesota and is working toward an MS in studies of the future at the University of

Houston.

Terry Grim ) Futurist

After working at IBM for 30 years on leading-edge technology and strategic projects, Terry Grim joined

Social Technologies in 2007 as a futurist and consultant for strategic practices. She brings an

extensive background in strategy development, customer engagements, and large-scale and missioncritical

development management for top IBM clients including NASA, British Telecom, and the State

of Washington. Terry received a BS with high honors (Phi Beta Kappa) in computer science from the

University of Florida in 1975. She has an MS in studies of the future from the University of Houston

and now teaches in that program.

Scott Reif ) Futurist

Scott Reif is a futurist and contributing writer to Social Technologies’ Technology Foresight and Global

Lifestyles multiclient projects. He also serves as a project manager, administering and writing for

custom client projects. Scott’s domains of expertise include social foresight and epistemological

futures, with a special focus on the emerging fields of complexity studies and integral theory.

Currently a graduate student in the MS program for studies of the future at the University of Houston,

he is in the process of completing his thesis work on the study of behavior under conditions of

uncertainty. Scott has a BA in philosophy from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.

BRO. ERLE FRAYNE ATTENDS SOCIAL TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR

Bro.  Erle Frayne Argonza attended the social technologies seminar sponsored by the Pi Gamma Mu last 18^th of January 2008. The resource speaker was no other than Dr. Cesar Mercado, the country’s main advocate today of social technology. The seminar was held at the College of Mass Communication Auditorium of the U.P. Diliman.

 

Social technology refers to ‘know-how’ as applications of social science principles. The equivalent in the physical sciences are ‘physical technologies, while those in the biological sciences are ‘bio-technologies’ or biotech.

 

The Philippines had already accumulated many social technologies across the decades, such as those utilized for development engagements. However, the term ‘social technology’ itself is a newly coined one. The reason for this rather late coinage of the term is the ambivalence or fear associated with ‘technology’ as applied to the human dimension.

 

Dr. Mercado clarified that there is no reason to fear the use of the term at all. It’s just a matter of using a label for already existing practices. The use of a formal label will redound to better popularization of the technologies, and will enable Filipino experts in particular to compete with those of the developed countries’ experts who are way ahead in the practical sphere.

 

Dr. Mercado then elaborated on examples of social technologies. In the field of business, the term commonly used is ‘best practices’.  Dr. Mercado clarified that they are one and the same. Such practices are social technologies.

 

Dr. Mercado also proceeded to clarify many issues, aside from exhibiting examples of social technologies. Among these was the issue of ‘world class’, to which he cautioned the participants about blind adoption of the same category. 

 

The core speaker, Dr. Mercado, recommended that a national society be formed that will be the chief campaign advocate for social technologies. Bro. Erle Argonza, who is supportive of social technology production and advocacy, agrees very much with this institutional requisite to advance social technologies.

 

During the open forum, Bro. Erle Argonza raised the observation of an ‘over-institutionalization fatigue’.  Marginal folks have gotten tired of community organizing and other related capacity-building efforts. This phenomenon had caused snags in many projects in the field from the mid-90s onwards. Dr. Mercado replied with an analytical thought, and remarked that it’s time we slow down a bit in our development efforts as over-dynamics had produced the observed backfire.

 

It proved to be a very meaningful and substantive occasion, coming as it is on the Centennial Anniversary of the U.P. Dr. Mercado was a retired professor and administrator of the U.P. (C. Mass Comm.), former UNICEF official, and founder/CEO of the Development Center for Asia Africa Pacific or DCAAP. The DCAAP, an international ‘think-tank’, is among the few institutions in the Philippines that have been active in innovating on social technologies.
